Why I Created This Blog

¡Hola, Bienvenidos a todos!

I am in my fourth year of school majoring in Education and Spanish. I'm from Minnesota and am about to embark on a life changing experience, immersing myself in the language, culture, and pura vida of Costa Rica!

My ultimate goal of going to Costa Rica is to become fluent in speaking Spanish. But along the way, I am going to be visiting a very close friend from high school, experiencing Costa Rican Independence Day and Christmas, traveling to three countries and living on the beach. Oh, and I am taking classes in a university in the capital city, but it goes without debate, most of my learning will be experienced when I am not in a classroom but around the friendly Ticos (name Costa Rican's call themselves) and being out on adventures.

If you're reading this, I miss you, so do your best to let me know what you're up to! And I'll do my best filling you in on my adventures :)

Nicaragua, Part 3

Another mural of Daniel Ortega, the president.

A kid's playground, Can you see all of the garbage covering the ground? Its extremely dirty.
A stop on the side of the road for "tilinches".

A family sitting outside their home, we stopped and asked them for directions.

 A small cute restaurant.
In Catarina, an observatory point of the lake. How beautiful is this view?!

They told me, "Rachel, go sit up on the fence.." It took me an unusually long time to figure out how to sit up there. It was pretty hysterical.
This is me giving up the sitting pose and smiling for the camera.

They offered horse back riding along the lake.

There's how you sit on the fence! haha..

Some boys playing baseball with a stick and something that functioned as a ball!! I really wanted to go take a swing!

BEAUTIFUL hand carved furniture with sunflowers! :-)

A house, notice the roof!

Sitting around the market.

I meant to try to take the picture of the beautiful balcony that wrapped around that house on the corner.  We were in the car, so I didn't quite get the picture in time, but DID capture a bit of it, with the man walking with his stick.

Nicaragua- land of lakes and volcanoes.

Rice growing in the fields.

A leather shop, in the window you can see boots, belts, and on the bottom---baseballs and baseball gloves!!

San Juan del Sur
Eating breakfast at our hotel.

Church in San Juan del Sur.

 "They will never defeat us"

A bridge to cross over the ocean, although a small part here, in San Juan del Sur.

Who I traveled with: Berto's dad, his sister, and Berto's mom.

 Man sleeping in this hammock.

Look at this awesome, cute little store! I'm determined to open one myself just like it someday. Below is a description of what they do. If you know me well, it describes all my likes and loves to a T! (New and used books, little gourmet sampler foods, cappuccino, coffee, magazines, and CRAFTS in an art studio!!)

~A little Italian inspiration in Nicaragua~

Here's a fun series of photos taken at the hotel in San Juan del Sur....

Driving up the mountain to the lookout point of San Juan del Sur to the statue of Jesus...

This was my favorite lookout point so far. It was breathtaking.
Almost there to the lookout! Just need to climb this hill. Honestly, I would NEVER EVER in a million years drive up this in a car. It is EXTREMELY steep, this picture doesn't even quite show its steepness, look on for more pictures!

Is this better?! Can you imagine driving a CAR up there!? Heck no!

Imagine the view of those homes...
 Hello, Jesus...

 "Jesus, I trust in you"
Notice the different colors of the water...

Some interesting flowers, I think they look like fingers with painted nails!

We went to the grocery store, I bought unsalted peanuts and raisins, yogurt and two bananas and it cost me 90 córdobas, which is less than $2!!

Bertos' parents bought rum raisin ice cream for us to eat in the car. Fun!

These outdoor brick ovens are very popular in Nicaragua, and some parts of Costa Rica. We pulled over on the side of the road because the señora was outside washing clothes. We asked her if we could look and take pictures. Some day I'd like to create this in my backyard!

Here she is washing clothes.

This is her house.

Here she is drying rice in the sun.

Crossed the border, back in Costa Rica, in Guanacaste driving back to San José.

This was funny. We stopped at a small soda for food. Berto's parents both wanted to help me order. I said I wanted a gallo de pollo. So first, his mom asked for one, and immediately after his dad said the same thing to the waitress, on my behalf. After the waitress left, I jokingly asked if that meant I was going to get two gallos de pollo!? And sure enough when the waitress came she brought me two! And they were beef, no problem though! The lesson learned is although they were trying to help, next time I will order for myself! hahaha...
